Precaution During Blood Donation Camps

Rotary TTK Blood Bank, Bangalore Medical Services Trust (BMST) is the only stand alone not-for-profit blood bank in Karnataka which is NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers) accredited. This accreditation allows us to document, train and continuously improve on the various methodologies, tools and the requirements of the system at various levels. Thus our well trained nurses and technicians will follow the standard operating procedure of

  1. Wearing gloves, masks & aprons

  2. Using alcohol dipped swabs for cleaning before pricking

  3. Using disposable syringes only

In the wake of corona virus breakout, we will also ensure the following

  1. Crowd management by having donors in batches and maintain a safe distance as recommended by WHO

  2. Sanitizers at site for both our staff and the potential donors

  3. The bed is also sanitized with alcohol after every donation.

Who Can Donate?

  • Between 18-65 years old

  • Minimum 45 Kgs

  • Hemoglobin Level > 12.5

  • General good health

  • Our doctor does a check before the donation to ensure safety

What Should We Do Before Donate?

  • Be well rested the night before donating

  • Eat well-balanced food before you donate. YOU MUST NOT BE on empty stomach

  • Inform the doctor about the name and dosage of any medications you are taking.

  • Please refrain from smoking at least 2 hours before donating

  • Please AVOID CONSUMING ALCOHOL at least 24 hours before donating

Covid 19 Related

The following recommendations by Ministry for Exclusion of at- risk donors to maintain blood safety, instructing individuals to self-defer and refrain from donation for Covid-19

  • Wait time after Vaccination – 14 days

  • Wait time after COVID infection and subsequently testing RT-PCR Negative – 14 days

Does Corona Virus Spread Via BloodTransfusion?

There is no evidence of transmission of Corona Virus through blood and blood components and it is not necessary for covid-19 test on donated Blood and Blood components. Covid-19 mainly spreads by droplets produced as a result of Coughing or Sneezing of Covid-19 infected person.

Permanent Deferral Conditions

Volunteers with following conditions cannot donate Permanently

  • Abnormal bleeding disorder

  • Heart, Kidney, Liver disorders

  • Epilepsy, mental disorders

  • Leprosy, Cancer

  • Insulin dependent diabetics

  • Uncontrolled High BP

Temporary Deferral Conditions

Please wait for the stipulated times after these events

  • Surgery, Typhoid, Dog Bite, Rabies Vaccination – 1 Year

  • Tattooing or body piercing, Intravenous drug abuse, risk factors for HIV / AIDS, unsafe sex – 6 Months

  • Dental extraction or Root Canal treatment, Malaria – 3 Months

  • Vaccination – 2 Weeks

For Female Donors

Please do not donate for the following conditions

  • During Pregnancy

  • While Lactating

  • after delivery / abortion – 6 Months

  • During Menstrual period ( 6 – 7 days)
